The Voice of War

Hear the roar, the raging voice of war
The blow that bludgeons through the brain
Screams implore, the battering at the door
Little will remain.
                                                                       
Hearers cower, the raucous rant of power
The thuds that shudder through the earth
Crackling flame, the women crushed in shame
Hatred's songs of mirth.
                                                                               
         
          See the fire, the smarting blaze roars higher
          Jerking shadows in the glare
          Glinting steel, coarse voices hard with zeal
          Run! But don't know where.


          Wounds have bled, last wheezings of the dead
          Scattered entrails of the woe
          Pain and dread, the bodies drenched in red
          Search, but fear to know.

Feel the beat, the distant tramping feet
The drum that quickened to the kill
Calls retreat.  Prostrated in defeat
Weep when all is still.
