Daniel          Please don't ask me why

Herald          Why reject his offer?
                     Why are you so set?
                     A few years and no more debt

Daniel           I have tried the slow climb
                     Now there’s no more time
                     Debt keeps mounting
                     Tembi’s counting
                     On me to clear it
                     But I can’t get near it

Herald           Daniel, this is different.  Think again.

Daniel           You don’t know how I feel.

Herald          Try it.  It will help to ease your pain.

Daniel          Got to get off this wheel

Herald          With some steady earning
                     Probably some learning
                     You’ll be fine to start again.

Daniel          Herald, you know nothing about me.
                    Gambled and I know I'm through
                    If I don't give them what they're due.

                    (spoken to rhythm)  I've tried everything -shady deals,
                    selling mbanje - nothing worked.  Just the handlers made
                    a pile.  Now I need the big one or I'm finished.

                     (he walks slowly away from Herald, pausing to say, over his shoulder)

    (spoken to rhythm) I told you I couldn’t take the job,
     but you wouldn’t have it.
